Best of Breed and Champion AOSB Junior
Results - We did pretty well at this show. It wasn't super big but we had some more competition in our class. The best news was we had a Wheaten pullet win Best of Breed in both junior shows and Champion AOSB in one as well. We've never had much luck with the Wheaten females and I think they look pretty good. So I'm happy to see them get some recognition. In the open show we were Reserve Best of Breed with a black hen. She's our best hen and not quite 100% on the feathers. She lost to a nice cockerel by Aaron Hickson. So no shame there. I think cockerels are the most likely choice to win breed and us not having any blacks ready is our fault. Should be ready soon. This is going to be the last show for our black cock bird we've been showing. The cockerels will be ready by the next show and he's starting to loose condition and his comb is just getting too big now. We're going to put him in the breeding pen to start getting some chicks from him the first of the year. He's had a good run. Also we've decided to stop showing one of the black hens we've been using. She did really well as a pullet last year and won class at Ft. Worth Stock Show junior, but I think she's too small to be competitive with the other hens now. She just didn't get quite big enough. Had fun at the show and we swapped for a new bird a rose comb rhode island red from Aaron Hickson. So we will see how he does next time.
Preview- Next up we are attending the Klein show. We've never been to this show. It's a double show, plus a junior show. And they have showmanship. It's hosted by the Klein FFA and I believe it's supposed to be a good turnout. I know some local folks should be there we haven't seen at other shows that have our type of birds. So always look forward to more entries to compare with. Our birds are ready and looking pretty good. It got really cold here so we washed them a little earlier than normal and are trying to keep them clean. Black cockerels still aren't quite ready so we didn't enter them. Besides that, it's the same as the show 2 weeks ago. But the birds look better. This is our last show before Thanksgiving break and we won't have another show until the Shawnee show in December.
Big thanks to the Klein FFA for putting on a great show!
