October 18-20th, 2019 - State Fair of Texas. Dallas, TX
Best of Breed and Champion AOSB Wheaten Cock Bird
Results- We had a great time at the State Fair of Texas and did very well. We won the AOSB class again with the wheaten cock bird we also showed in Odessa to reserve breed. There was a fair amount of competition this time. There were a few whites that weren't ours. There was several blacks that weren't ours. And someone had several Buffs we have never seen but were very nice. We showed 3 whites for the first time. A cockerel and two pullets. The cockerel took Reserve Variety to an Ernie Haire hen. Ernie is a long time chicken expert and friend. His whites always do really well. He shows a few other breeds of chicken as well. The white birds look great and because of him we wanted to show them. The black cockbird won Best Variety and a black hen was Reserve Variety. But it was the wheaten cock bird that took Best of Breed and then also won Best AOSB. There was several other breeds in the class shown as well. Cubalayas and Sumatras about 6 or 8 all together. The wheaten looked great and took home the class. The Champion Large Fowl went to a Rhode Island Red cock bird and the Reserve to a Leghorn pullet.
Lauren placed fourth is Senior Showmanship. These seniors are really good, experienced kids. They handle the birds like pros and know a ton of stuff.
Fair shows are great because there are a lot of non chicken people there. People and kids who aren't used to seeing birds like this get to be exposed to the hobby and it's fun to show them off, answer questions etc. Lauren brought a friend from FFA who is interested in chickens and she got to "shop" the other breeds in looking for something to raise. I feel like the show was run well and look forward to next year.
Preview- Our next show we are attending is the State Fair of Texas. We've never shown here, and a lot of our friends don't care to show here. We've heard it's a lot of trouble. But it's in Dallas and we are in Fort Worth. And as my goat friend said before, "It's the State Fair of Texas! Why wouldn't you want to show there?". Lauren is excited to get back into the Showmanship Competition which this show offers. We are bringing the same birds we brought to Odessa plus a white cockerel that is the closest thing to ready we have. Whites are new to us this year and they're looking good. White birds look great at the shows, so we're excited for it. We'll have more ready for future shows. The older birds have stopped molting and most have the majority of their feathers back in. They aren't 100% at this time with conditioning, but they are still good in type so we think we should do ok.
Thank you to Big Tex and the Great State Fair of Texas!
